Editorial Maternity Photography: Behind Our Favorite Sessions

Every maternity session starts the same way: someone tells us they don’t feel photogenic right now, and by the end of the hour they’re asking when they can book again. That shift is the whole point. Here’s a look at some of our favorite editorial maternity work with Indi Families, the family and maternity studio of The Indi Collective, and what actually goes into getting portraits that feel more like a magazine spread than a standard photo op.

Why editorial-style maternity photos look different

The difference between a snapshot and an editorial portrait usually comes down to three things: wardrobe that moves, light that flatters, and a photographer who directs without making you feel directed. We lean on flowing gowns, sheer fabric, and rich color — think emerald velvet, warm neutrals, deep black — because they hold up against natural backdrops and read beautifully in both color and black and white.

The golden-hour window is non-negotiable

We time almost every outdoor maternity session to start about an hour before sunset. That window gives us soft, directional light with none of the harsh midday shadows that flatten a bump and wash out skin tone. It also happens to be the most comfortable time of day to be outside at 32 weeks pregnant, which matters more than people expect.

Partners and belly close-ups, without it feeling staged

Some of the most requested images from any maternity gallery are the simplest: a hand on a belly, a shirt lifted for a reveal shot, a quiet moment between partners. We build in time for these specifically, usually toward the end of the session once everyone has relaxed into it.
