That’s the whole philosophy behind newborn sessions with Indi Families, the newborn and maternity studio of The Indi Collective. Here’s what a real in-home newborn session looks like, and why we shoot it this way.
Why we photograph newborns at home, not in a studio
Your home is where these first weeks are actually happening — the nursery you spent months planning, the couch you haven’t left in days, the exact quality of light that comes through your kitchen window at 10am. A studio backdrop erases all of that. Shooting on location means the photos still feel like your life, not a generic set.
Built around feeding schedules, not the other way around
We photograph babies in the first two to three weeks, while they’re still curled up and sleepy, and we build in breaks for feeding and diaper changes as part of the plan, not an interruption to it. Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes, which sounds long until you remember how often a two-week-old needs to eat.
It’s a family session too, even though it’s called “newborn”
Grandparents who flew in for the birth, an older sibling meeting the baby for the first time, a dad who hasn’t slept in three days but wants one clear photo of his face next to his kid’s — all of that belongs in a newborn gallery, and we make room for it.
Booking a newborn session
We recommend booking while you’re still pregnant, ideally by 30 weeks, so we can hold a flexible window around your due date — babies rarely arrive on schedule, and we build the plan around that.
